Why do I keep bees?

Simple answer, they pollinate my fruit trees I use to make my homemade jams, jellies & marmalades. But I had no idea how I would fall in love with these creatures.

It all started in 2012 when I started making my own homemade jams, jellies & marmalades for using the fruit from our trees in the garden. We have a lot of fruit trees & bushes; a large range of Apples, Crab Apples, Plums, Rhubarb, Gooseberries, Black & Red currants, blackberries, blueberries, damsons, Pears, Chillies, Quince and more. Honey bees pollinate them all (no pollination = no fruit, it’s that simple), so they are pretty important. It took three years until I finally got them. While i waited I spent my spare time reading and learning about bees. Now I have bees, and my spare time is used up exactly the same way. I always have at least one bee book nearby.

This year, 2015, I finally did it! I got my very own honey bee colony, two in fact. I am now a new beekeeper or beekeeper in training. And it is AMAZING! They are wonderful creatures.

Ignoring all the environmental reasons, of which there is a supermarket full of reasons, I keep honeybees because:

  • I bake using honey and now I can use my local honey
  • I like honey… (especially in tea)
  • Bees pollinate flowers and make the garden develop
  • Beeswax candles are the best around
  • Furniture polish using pure beeswax and pure turpentine (not turpentine substitute)
  • Beeswax Cosmetics, creams, salves, lip balms etc.
  • Fascinating subject to learn about and try ideas and methods
  • After a busy, hard working day, it is brilliant to relax and watch the busy bees entering and leaving the hive bringing in beautiful brightly coloured pollen loads.

Liquid honey is known as nectar from the gods. Eating honey straight from the hive! It doesn’t get much better than that – only fellow beekeepers share that joy and privilege.
